November 15, 2024 – This is a predictable, but effective post apocalyptic science fiction suspense movie set in the Colorado Rocky Mountains.
Anthony Mackie (of “Avengers: Endgame”) stars as Will (Mackie is also one of the producers of this movie) a man determined to save the life of his son by braving mysterious killer creatures who have wiped out most of the human race. Will, and his son, Hunter (played by Danny Boyd Jr.) live in a small community living high in the Rocky Mountains near Boulder, Colorado. The creatures do not travel higher than 8,000 feet above sea level. People who stay above that elevation remain safe.
Little is known about the creatures, which had suddenly appeared from underground three years earlier. The creatures seem to be invulnerable to bullets or bombs. The person who knows the most about the creatures is a physicist who is Will's neighbor, Nina (played by Morena Baccarin of “Deadpool”). The creatures killed her family, and she wants revenge. She also thinks she may have discovered a vulnerability in the creatures' armor.
Will plans to travel to a hospital in Boulder for supplies he needs to help with his son's illness. It is a life or death mission. He asks Nina to go with him, knowing she will want to get back to her lab in Boulder to pick up the supplies she hopes will allow her to hunt and kill the creatures. Katie (Maddie Hasson of “God Bless America”) who loves Will, decides to come along as well.
Will, Katie and Nina all have a complicated past, and emotional baggage related to an earlier expedition to Boulder, led by Nina, in which Will's wife, Tara, was killed. They need each other in order to survive the dangerous passage to Boulder, but they constantly fight with each other.
Since this is not a big budget movie, the creatures are seldom seen in the movie. Practical effects are used as often as possible, reducing the amount of computer graphics needed to depict the creatures.
The plot of this movie unfolds in a very predictable manner, but there is a bit of a surprise in the end, and there is another surprise in a mid-credits scene, which seems intended to set up a sequel. Since this movie is not a big hit, it seems unlikely there will be a sequel.
Mackie, Baccarin and Hasson all give strong performances in this film. The interplay of these three characters is the strongest part of this movie, and is the real heart of this story. There is some action in this movie, but it is not an action movie. It is not a creature feature, either. Instead, it is more of a suspense movie, combined with a character study. As such, it is well-written by screenwriters John Glenn, Jacob Roman and Kenny Ryan. It is ably directed by George Nolfi (“The Banker”). This film rates a B.
