Laramie Movie Scope: Just Cause

Fairly entertaining mystery

March 6, 1995 -- ``Just Cause,'' stars Sean Connery as a law professor coaxed out of retirement to defend an apparently innocent man, Bobby Earl, played by Blair Underwood. Connery runs into small-town cop Tanny Brown, played by Laurence Fishburne, who makes his investigation uncomfortable. He also crosses paths with multiple killer Blair Sullivan (Ed Harris) who makes his investigation perilous.

``Just Cause'' is a pretty good whodunit for the first hour or so and then it descends into a jumble of cliches and finally settles for a standard and predictable action ending, complete with fights and a car chase. The small town southern characters and small town conspiracy angle is also standard.

Connery's performance is excellent and Fisburne is nearly as good as a tough and menacing cop. This is a very solid film until it runs out of ideas at the end. Even though the last act of the film isn't very original, it is fairly well done and makes for decent entertainment, but it could have been a lot better.

It rates a B-.
