May 31, 1997 -- "Trial and Error" is a nice little romantic comedy for the summer about a lawyer, Charlie Tuttle (Jeff Daniels), who is forced to switch identities and take new look at his life.
Tuttle gets smashed at his bachelor party and is in no shape to go into the courtroom the next day, so his buddy, Richard Rietti (Michael Richards, who plays Kramer on the Seinfeld TV show), an aspiring actor, fills in for him. A series of events causes the two to switch rolls much longer than either one would care to.
Tuttle, who is supposed to marry his spoiled fianc‚e, Tiffany (Alexandra Wentworth), becomes attracted to a waitress named Billie, (Charlize Theron of "Two Days in the Valley" and "That Thing You Do"), while Rietti falls the for the beautiful prosecuting attorney, (Jessica Steen).
Pretty soon both men are having second thoughts about themselves. They both re-evaluate their lives and are changed for the better. This is pretty lightweight stuff, but hey, it's summer. It doesn't have to be serious. It rates a B.
